Lingüística Quantitativa, Matemàtica i Computacional
The abbreviation LQMC stands for “Lingüística Quantitativa, Matemàtica i Computacional” in Catalan (“Quantitative, Mathematical, and Computational Linguistics” in English).
We are a Catalan research group at UPC, Barcelona, the result of uniting two labs: CQL and INTERACT.
We focus on language and animal communication across three main areas:
- Quantitative Linguistics (which involves statistical analysis of human language, often for descriptive purposes),
- Mathematical Linguistics (which uses approaches to language from Algebra, Logic, and Graph Theory and Algorithmics to model, explain and/or predict), and
- Computational Linguistics (which applies Machine Learning to Natural Language Processing).
While all of us have diverse research interests, we all share a particular interest in the study of syntactic dependency structures, which cuts across all three areas of research.
Our group has four main goals:
- to explore patterns and structures in human language and animal communication,
- to provide explanations for these patterns and structures,
- to solve problems related to natural language comprehension, and
- to develop practical applications.
